Re: UDO on LINUX
I don't know of anyone who have tried any version of UDO on Linux. The
only possibles would be a version for Solaris X86 or SCO. I don't even
know if those ware availbale.
My educated quess however is that UDO will be ported to Linux and that
it will happen within this year.
This is not based on any kind of insider information or anything I
have heard from anyone at Informix or anywhere else. In fact I have
heard only the same information you dug up that it will not be ported.
However Informix do plan to make plain IDS and UDO into one and the
same product. That means that they'll have to port at least the core
of UDO to Linux to keep up with the latest version of IDS (9.x or
whatever it will be called).
With more and more of the big guy's becoming interested in Linux (SAP
beeing one of the latest) it lies clearly in the cards that the full
UDO will be ported.
It's also clear that Informix needs UDO on Linux to get the support
and development resources of the Linux community on to the UDO engine.
That could help them along into making this the successfull product it
should be.
We do "character and numbers" applications only (no "fancy" datatypes)
but sure could use a lot of the features available only in UDO to
create much better applications for our customers.
The day Informix ports it to Linux (and sell it at a reasonable price)
we'll start using it and help create a huge demand for it. If people
only knew what they are missing they would rally to Informix to get
UDO - even those with "old fashioned" "character and numbers"
applications only. That's actually a huge market that Informix is
currently missing out on, partly due to their pricing of UDO, partly
due to it's non availability on key low cost platforms. (NT is not
particularly interesting of course, and the price even there is out of
our leaque.)
The day Informix understands the pricing and availability issues
related to UDO it will become a significant product in the
marketplace. They do however not have much time for it. Hopefully
they'll announce UDO on Linux at the user conference this summer, or
even before.
